restorative yoga wednesday, no class at caretaker's house today (tuesday), review from last week

hi everyone,

a few updates:

*thanks to everyone again for all of your energy towards helping Hollis Hawthorne. she arrived at Stanford University Hospital last Monday!! all the $ from the benefits is going to help w/ the huge loan her family had to take out to fly her here, and towards the massive medical bills in India. thank you again. you can read updates or donate more at http://friendsofhollis.com Eliza from the Caretaker's House is one of the main updaters of http://friendsofhollis.blogspot.com

*i am cancelling this tuesday's yoga class (that's today - march 24th) at the caretaker's house in order to have a semi night off. sorry! please practice on your own and come the week after if you can!! let me know if you'd like suggestions of things to practice at home... or if you have any questions from past classes.

*on wednesday, march 25th, i'll be substitute teaching a restorative yoga class at the yoga loft. please come if you can! the class is from 4:45 to 6, is $10 (the cheapest they get these days in a regular studio), and is at 321 divisadero st. @ page st. http://theloftsf.com restorative yoga is a wonderful way to deeply relax your body/mind and renew your energy. only a few gentle poses are practiced, with the support of many props, and they are held for a longer time than in a normal practice. i encourage you to try it out even if you have never been to this type of class to feel the many benefits of restorative yoga.

*thanks to those who came to class last tuesday. for those who couldn't make it or who would like a little review of the class, here is a bit of what we talked about (inspired by the retreat last weekend w/ the yoga loft!):

*how to integrate living from the center in real life
*hara is the belly center, and is a japanese word for the art of exuding one's personal energy
*hara, heart, & head - how to bring them together
*why do we leave center
*what do we do or what attitude do we have that makes us feel centered

*yoga helps us to shed layers & get back to our authentic selves
*our yoga practice is like a mirror where our everyday habits are reflected, we can use this to change those repetitive habits/thoughts if we choose
*where is the line between being fearful & courageous, vulnerable & safe, where do they intersect? as we find this place, what a relief it is can be

*events in the yoga community, please come out and support:

tuesday, march 24:
judgement day going away party, foxtails brigade, & devotionals (tyson from 2 gallants & anton from judgement day), 8pm, bluesix, 3043 24th st. @ treat st. $5

wednesday, march 25:

Thanks for HOLLIS donations + Restorative Yoga Wednesday

HI everyone,
A BIG thank you to those who made it to yoga class tonight (& to those who were there in spirit) at the Caretaker's House, for sending healing energy towards Hollis, family, & friends. $46 was raised towards the costs of getting her back to the US, so she can have medical care at Stanford Hospital and hopefully recover from her coma. You can see the latest updates on Hollis at http://www.friendsofhollis.blogspot.com ... If you can give more, there is a paypal account on the blog. Whatever you do, please spread the word.

Also, while I'm here, a reminder about a restorative community yoga class tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Yoga Loft. It is $10 and goes from 4:45-6pm. 321 Divisadero @ Page St. http://theloftsf.com If you haven't been before, restorative classes are pretty much pure bliss, where you get to let go and completely relax, with much less movement than a regular hatha yoga class. You do fewer poses and stay in them longer, using lots of props (bolsters, sandbags, blankets, straps, eye pillows). Many yoga practitioners take a restorative class once a month or even once a week to balance out the continuous movement we have in our lives. Don't worry - everything is explained as well if you're new to the poses... Anyway, I encourage you to come check out the class if the time works for you. Rachel (an awesome teacher and facilitator of relaxation!!) will be teaching it tomorrow, and I will be subbing on occasion in the future (March 25th).

See you there, next Tuesday, or sometime in between.

ommmmmmmmmm shanti

Jessie

PS - If you can make it next week to Tuesday's class, please send a quick note so I know how many people to expect. RSVPs are appreciated but not mandatory. If you forget, please do still come, there's just not a guaranteed space.

Tuesday Yoga Class, Guided Meditation, & Chants

Dear friends of yoga,

I just created this blog to keep friends updated on yoga class announcements & updates, as well as all things pertaining to yoga that I'd like to share. Please feel free to write me w/ questions or comments (jessyjeanine@gmail.com), and check back (or subscribe to the feed if you can figure out how) for updates. Hope to see you in class sometime!

Here is an update I sent today:

I am writing to remind you about class on ongoing Tuesdays, at the Caretakers House. 848 Divisadero between McCallister and Fulton Streets.

There is a new start time, for those of you who have not heard. I now ask that you arrive at 6pm so we can start class promptly at 6:15pm, ending at 7:45pm. (This is 15 minutes later than the previous start time.)

If you are coming tonight or in the future, please send a quick message to RSVP or tell me at the previous class, as it helps to know how many to expect, and reserves a spot for you in case the class fills up. (If you want to come and forget to RSVP every once in awhile, we will make room if needed, and you are still absolutely welcome.)

Also, below is a guided meditation on Abundance that we used in class at the beginning of January, for the new year, as well as the last two chants that we've been using. I am copying them here in case you want to try them out on your own. Please feel free to pass them on as well.

Guided meditation:

Abundance Meditation

Relax completely in a comfortable position.

Picture yourself in any lovely natural environment -- perhaps by a green, open meadow with a lovely brook, or on white sand by the ocean. Take some time to imagine all the beautiful details, and see yourself fully enjoying and appreciating your surroundings.

Now begin to walk, and soon find yourself in some totally different surrounding environment, perhaps exploring a waving field of golden grain, or swimming in a lake. Continue to wander and explore, finding more and more exquisitely beautiful environments of great variety -- mountains, forests, deserts...whatever suits your fantasy. Take a little time to appreciate each one.

Now imagine returning home to a simple but comfortable and lovely environment, whatever would most suit you. Imagine having loving family, friends, and community around you. Visualize yourself doing work that you love, and expressing yourself creatively in ways that feel just right for you. You are being amply rewarded for your efforts, in internal satisfaction, appreciation from others, and financial return. Imagine yourself feeling fulfilled and thoroughly enjoying life. Step back, and see if you can imagine a world full of people living simply yet abundantly, in harmony with one another and the earth.

2 chants we've been practicing in class w/ interpretations:

Gayatri Mantra*
Om bhur bhuvaha svaha
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dhimahi
Dhiyo yonah prachodayat

Praise to the source of all things. It is due to your that we attain true happiness on the planes of the earth, astral, causal. It is due to your transcendent nature that you are worthy of being worshipped and adored. Ignite us with your all pervading light.

Om Asatoma*
Om asatoma satgamaya
Tamasoma jyotir gamaya
Mrityorma amritamgamaya

Take us from the false to the truth, from darkness to light, from poison to nectar.
*Both these chants were copied from Deva Premal's Music Page. They are so kind to list lyrics and chords on their site at http://www.devapremalmiten.com/music/lyrics_chords.htm

As always, let me know if you have any questions or requests for class.
Thanks! See you soon.
