Subbing at the Yoga Loft tonight 6-7:30pm. Future 2010 Schedule of Classes!

Hi everyone,

Happy Winter Solstice & all that jazz.

I wanted to let you all know that I'm switching up the plan again tonight (sorry!!), as I'll be subbing at the Yoga Loft. It will be the same style of class that I always teach on Tuesdays, Gentle All-Levels Hatha Yoga, but with a few more props!

The class is from 6pm-7:30pm at 321 Divisadero St. @ Page St.
Tuesday December 22nd (today!)
Gentle Hatha All-Levels Yoga

There is a charge for this class. It's reduced to $10 for friends (you all) though, instead of the regular $17 drop-in. I hope you still will come to class if you're free at that time.

A couple more updates while I'm here. We'll skip Restorative Yoga this Friday because of Christmas, but will resume the week after, January 1st, New Years Day, when class will be at 5pm (instead of the regular 11am time). That class will be $10 as well at the Yoga Loft. After that week, class will be at the regular 11-12:30 time.

As mentioned in the last update, I will be teaching a new class starting in January. Saturdays from 12:45-2pm. January 9th will be a free class just to get things going and as a trial, then the class will officially start on Saturday January 30th. I hope you all will consider attending, and please do spread the word! It will be a Gentle Hatha Yoga Class like on Tuesday nights, and it will be a good place to take your practice a bit further (while practicing contentment with where you're at). :)

Last but not least, I am thinking of changing the Tuesday night classes to just twice a month for a little while, perhaps on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of the month, while I'm trying to settle into a new schedule and taking time to organize some things. :) At the same time, if there are enough people who can make it on a weekly basis, I could keep the class going, but maybe would just have to let you know that week. It'll be a bit of an experiment. Let me know if you have any ideas, or suggestions, around that. The Tuesday Caretakers House class will resume on Tuesday January 5th.

Oops. There is one more thing. the Yoga Loft is offering 10 (or more) free classes for 2010, Sunday January 3rd and Sunday January 10th, so check their schedule to see if there's anything you'd like to attend. http://theloftsf.com

thanks for your support & happy holidays. see you soon.

Caretakers Tuesday Yoga Class NOT Happening This Week or Next, Good news = good show tonight :)

Sorry everyone - I'm sadly canceling yoga class at the Caretakers House TONIGHT - last minute style - as it turns out I have to finish up some work this evening before going out of town on Wednesday.

My intention these days is to get those things done that are lingering on the to-do list, and I happen to have a large accumulation of those! Unfortunately, the timing is just in conflict with the class this week. :(

Actually, I was going to cancel the class anyway when I heard about the show listed below (Honeycomb at the Climate Theatre), so that I could encourage you all to come with me and to be there on time... but saying that I have work to do (which is true as well now) maybe sounds like a better reason. :)

Either way, I hope you all get to practice on your own or go to another class. (Let me know if you want a recommendation - two of my favorite teachers, Marni & Geoffrey, have classes on Tuesday nights in the neighborhood that might be good to check out.) I hope you also can make it to the show!!

As a heads up, I return back from Ohio next Tuesday night at 10pm so am so bummed to not have class next week as well, but email me if you want practice ideas... I am hoping to add a weekend class perhaps starting in January at the Yoga Loft, for those who can't make it Tuesdays or who would want to attend a second weekly class, so stay tuned on that, and let me know if you think you might be able to make it if that happens.

As always, let me know if you have requests of poses you want to work on or learn/explore in the future, and I'm happy to incorporate those into classes.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all. Of course a great intention for this time is to practice gratitude, and I hope you all also use this time to practice and develop whatever intentions you've been coming up with in recent classes or outside in the "real" world.

Thanks for your continued support of yoga at the Caretakers House, and for understanding switches in the schedule like the ones above. :)

Ommmmm Shanti

Jessie

at the CLIMATE THEATRE
285 9th st. at Folsom
doors at 7:30, show at 8

$7-15 sliding scale

Over the summer Emily Ritz began performing her music with a small lady choir including Heather Normandale, Courtney Nicole and Karin Dahl. The group was soon joined by vibraphone player Andrew Maguire. Honeycomb has now expanded to include Cellist Nate Blaz and Kacey Johansing on vocals and percussion. Joe Lewis has also been accompanying the group on upright bass. They have been playing shows in the bay area monthly and are currently recording an EP due for release in March.

During this time Emily has also been semi-secretly writing and recording all new songs with Rob Shelton from The Moanin' Dove and Nate Blaz of Geographer. The new arrangement consists of amazing musicians Jake Nochimow, Andrew Maguire, James Riotto and Nomi. The songs have yet to be performed in front of an audience.

Honeycomb will be the only band playing the night of the 24th. At 8 sharp they will start with a set of the songs they have been playing out for the last few months and then there will be a second set of the never before heard music.

caretakers house tonight, free postural assessment, vote today, & upcoming shows!

hi everyone,

i hope you're all doing well and enjoying this beautiful autumn weather, and the full moon.

i wanted to remind you all about class tonight at the caretakers house. same time, same place!

also, karen, who a lot of you know, is offering a free postural assessment for anyone who wants it. either after class today or you can set something up w/ her in the future. i'm including the info about that below, please email her if you're interested, or just let her know today.

friday i don't think i'll be teaching restorative yoga because i'm going on a yoga retreat w/ my mom! but i hope you can make it in future weeks. (it's $10 for friends.)

as a side note, be sure to go out and vote if you haven't done so yet! it is so quick, as there are only a few things to vote on. if you'd like, there are some suggestions here: http://kateatyrownrisk.posterous.com/kate-slate-2009

lastly, slightly off-topic (though music is a form of yoga), i also wanted to let you all know about some shows that i hope you can make it to. :) hope to see you at both of these:

Nov. 12th at the Rickshaw Stop: Michael Musika's next seance in the series with Loyd Family Players, Quinn DeVeaux, & Indianna Hale

Nov. 15th at the Make-Out Room: SeaweedSway Showcase w/ Indianna Hale, "Windy-Gap" (Jeffrey Manson), & Slow Motion Cowboys

thank you, see you soon.

*Postural Assessment Info from Karen: Hi yoga friends! I am excited to share with you and reinforce the concepts I am learning in this workshop I am participating in. It is an advanced training for Pilates instructors in the application of techniques for physical rehabilitation. I'm offering free postural assessments to anyone who is interested. Why postural assessment? It's informative - aids body awareness and is useful in identifying the body's muscular imbalances that can contribute to pain and predispose the body to injury. Assessments don't take very long to do and it is something we could do right after yoga class. It would be a big help to me to get some extra practice and I think some useful info for you. Let me know if you are interested. :) Karen karen.dancingk@gmail.com

tues/fri yoga class reminders, recommended classes, & updates!

dear yoga-practicing friends,

this is a reminder about the usual yoga classes that i'm teaching this week: tuesday community class at the caretakers house and friday restorative at the yoga loft. come if you can! details are at the bottom of this message. we've been scanning the chakras at the end of class over the past week and will continue to do so this week. (don't worry if you don't know what that means!)

also, please save the date for the next acoustic music night at the yoga loft. the theme will be healing sounds, sacred spaces. friday october 23rd with sonya cotton, heather normandale (stitchcraft), & loft teachers lauren brown, carlin chew, & marni sclaroff. it promises to be a special night, and will be even more special if you can make it! (seriously.)

a few more announcements:

*every Sunday at the yoga loft, there's a vedanta meditation class with great discussion on yoga philosophy; and i highly recommend it, if you're interested in going beyond the poses or exploring meditation theory... it's from 5-6:30. everyone is welcome. regular class fees do apply. let me know if you'd like more info...

*there are $10 community classes happening everyday at the yoga loft. check their schedule if you want to see when, at http://theloftsf.com ... going to those classes is a great way to practice more if you're not wanting to pay for the regular priced classes.

*also, some of you have asked about classes that are in a similar style to the ones i teach on tuesdays. for a similar pace/style, i recommend the integral yoga institute (right by dolores park), and teachers kate truka, vanessa verlee, and kristie dahlia home. (look 'em up or i can send you their info.)

*last but not least, if you are wanting to delve deeper in your practice and try out some workshops, there are advanced studies workshops happening every weekend at the yoga loft... Seated Poses & Forward Bending - Opening the Hips, Quieting the Mind with Tony Briggs is the one happening this Saturday.... you can take just the asana part from 12:30-2, or go the whole day from 12:30-6.

that's it for now! perhaps will see you soon.

hello,

lastly, i wanted to let you all know about a great class i've been going to on sundays w/ Ravi at the Yoga Loft. the class is ameditation and philosophy discussion class. the discussion revolves around a randomly selected chapter in the book "I Am That" but tends to take on a direction of its own. I haven't had the book ever and always find the discussions to be totally relevant. (I plan to get the book this week!) We usually meditate for 10-20 minutes at the end. If you like yoga philosophy and are interested in meditation, this may be the class for you. It is every Sunday from 5-6:30. Let me know if you want more info... Hey everyone,

YOGA UPDATES:
i'll be giving an info session tomorrow on the yoga loft's teacher training / advanced studies program.  it's from 11am-1pm at the yoga loft. 321 divisadero st. @ page st.  email if you want more details, or go to http://theloftsf.com or just show up!  i highly recommend the program if you want to go deeper in your yoga practice, whether or not you want to teach...  it starts in september and is on saturdays and some sundays, going for 6 months.  i'll be involved in the coordination of the program so will get to hang out w/ you a lot if you sign up! ;)
while i'm giving updates / reminders, i'm teaching this tuesday at the caretakers house at the usual time - 6:15-7:45.  caretakers house class is cancelled the next two weeks(July 21st & July 28th).  however, on July 28th there is a FREE CLASS for beginners at the yoga loft from 6-7:30. (again!)  so i encourage you all to go to that and bring your friends & practice on your own or discover new classes in the meantime  (let me know if you want recommendations for your home practice or community classes.)
and, as mentioned before, i'll be teaching a friday restorative yoga class from 11-12:30 every week starting in august, when i return from vacation.

caretakers yoga tonight, restorative yoga tomorrow, & ahimsa (non-harming)

hello everyone,

i hope you're all doing well.

this is a reminder about the yoga classes i'm teaching this week: tonight at the caretakers house 6:15-7:45pm, and tomorrow at the yoga loft 4:45-6pm. come by if you have the time! more details are below.

tonight we will talk a little bit about the principle of ahimsa, or non-harming. as most of you probably know, it is a main principle of yoga. when we practice asanas, or hatha yoga, we want to do it in a way that does not harm ourselves (or others!), by letting go of extra ambition and relaxing into the natural ease of the pose. with practice, we can learn to channel that ambition into the breath and mindfulness in how we move.

here is a mini-description from Wikipedia:
Ahimsa (Devanagari: अहिंसा; IAST ahiṃsā) a Sanskrit term meaning to do no harm (literally: the avoidance of violence - himsa). Ahimsa is a rule of conduct that bars the killing or injuring of living beings. It is closely connected with the notion that all kinds of violence entail negative karmic consequences.

lastly, here are the details for the classes tonight & tomorrow:

she is open, and can welcome all things.

Santosha

may i accept whatever life may bring
centered in balance, gratitude and delight
may i trust the Divine hand in everything
and see beyond life's hardships to the light
I am contented with my self and my life
I am grateful for everything that happens to me
I maintain my balance in the face of hardships
I rejoice in the flow of life
I see God's goodness everywhere
I am a lighthearted being

(this one is from a handout one of my teachers gave me a few years ago, unfortunately w/ no credits to the author...  also, you can take God to mean whatever you want - nature, spirit, etc. In yoga, the term is used loosely...)

restorative yoga wednesday, no class at caretaker's house today (tuesday), review from last week

hi everyone,

a few updates:

*thanks to everyone again for all of your energy towards helping Hollis Hawthorne. she arrived at Stanford University Hospital last Monday!! all the $ from the benefits is going to help w/ the huge loan her family had to take out to fly her here, and towards the massive medical bills in India. thank you again. you can read updates or donate more at http://friendsofhollis.com Eliza from the Caretaker's House is one of the main updaters of http://friendsofhollis.blogspot.com

*i am cancelling this tuesday's yoga class (that's today - march 24th) at the caretaker's house in order to have a semi night off. sorry! please practice on your own and come the week after if you can!! let me know if you'd like suggestions of things to practice at home... or if you have any questions from past classes.

*on wednesday, march 25th, i'll be substitute teaching a restorative yoga class at the yoga loft. please come if you can! the class is from 4:45 to 6, is $10 (the cheapest they get these days in a regular studio), and is at 321 divisadero st. @ page st. http://theloftsf.com restorative yoga is a wonderful way to deeply relax your body/mind and renew your energy. only a few gentle poses are practiced, with the support of many props, and they are held for a longer time than in a normal practice. i encourage you to try it out even if you have never been to this type of class to feel the many benefits of restorative yoga.

*thanks to those who came to class last tuesday. for those who couldn't make it or who would like a little review of the class, here is a bit of what we talked about (inspired by the retreat last weekend w/ the yoga loft!):

*how to integrate living from the center in real life
*hara is the belly center, and is a japanese word for the art of exuding one's personal energy
*hara, heart, & head - how to bring them together
*why do we leave center
*what do we do or what attitude do we have that makes us feel centered

*yoga helps us to shed layers & get back to our authentic selves
*our yoga practice is like a mirror where our everyday habits are reflected, we can use this to change those repetitive habits/thoughts if we choose
*where is the line between being fearful & courageous, vulnerable & safe, where do they intersect? as we find this place, what a relief it is can be

*events in the yoga community, please come out and support:

tuesday, march 24:
judgement day going away party, foxtails brigade, & devotionals (tyson from 2 gallants & anton from judgement day), 8pm, bluesix, 3043 24th st. @ treat st. $5

wednesday, march 25:
restorative yoga @ the yoga loft
321 divisadero st. @ page st.

more great community events at http://seaweedsway.blogspot.com

thanks everyone,
see you soon.

Thanks for HOLLIS donations + Restorative Yoga Wednesday

HI everyone,
A BIG thank you to those who made it to yoga class tonight (& to those who were there in spirit) at the Caretaker's House, for sending healing energy towards Hollis, family, & friends. $46 was raised towards the costs of getting her back to the US, so she can have medical care at Stanford Hospital and hopefully recover from her coma. You can see the latest updates on Hollis at http://www.friendsofhollis.blogspot.com ... If you can give more, there is a paypal account on the blog. Whatever you do, please spread the word.

Also, while I'm here, a reminder about a restorative community yoga class tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Yoga Loft. It is $10 and goes from 4:45-6pm. 321 Divisadero @ Page St. http://theloftsf.com If you haven't been before, restorative classes are pretty much pure bliss, where you get to let go and completely relax, with much less movement than a regular hatha yoga class. You do fewer poses and stay in them longer, using lots of props (bolsters, sandbags, blankets, straps, eye pillows). Many yoga practitioners take a restorative class once a month or even once a week to balance out the continuous movement we have in our lives. Don't worry - everything is explained as well if you're new to the poses... Anyway, I encourage you to come check out the class if the time works for you. Rachel (an awesome teacher and facilitator of relaxation!!) will be teaching it tomorrow, and I will be subbing on occasion in the future (March 25th).

See you there, next Tuesday, or sometime in between.

ommmmmmmmmm shanti

Jessie

PS - If you can make it next week to Tuesday's class, please send a quick note so I know how many people to expect. RSVPs are appreciated but not mandatory. If you forget, please do still come, there's just not a guaranteed space.
