Caretakers Tuesday Yoga Class NOT Happening This Week or Next, Good news = good show tonight :)
Sorry everyone - I'm sadly canceling yoga class at the Caretakers House TONIGHT - last minute style - as it turns out I have to finish up some work this evening before going out of town on Wednesday.
playing the MUSIC BOX SERIES
at the CLIMATE THEATRE
285 9th st. at Folsom
doors at 7:30, show at 8
$7-15 sliding scale
Over the summer Emily Ritz began performing her music with a small lady choir including Heather Normandale, Courtney Nicole and Karin Dahl. The group was soon joined by vibraphone player Andrew Maguire. Honeycomb has now expanded to include Cellist Nate Blaz and Kacey Johansing on vocals and percussion. Joe Lewis has also been accompanying the group on upright bass. They have been playing shows in the bay area monthly and are currently recording an EP due for release in March.
During this time Emily has also been semi-secretly writing and recording all new songs with Rob Shelton from The Moanin' Dove and Nate Blaz of Geographer. The new arrangement consists of amazing musicians Jake Nochimow, Andrew Maguire, James Riotto and Nomi. The songs have yet to be performed in front of an audience.
Honeycomb will be the only band playing the night of the 24th. At 8 sharp they will start with a set of the songs they have been playing out for the last few months and then there will be a second set of the never before heard music.
You really don't want to miss this! Ukulele, vibes, cello, upright bass, rhodes, percussion, five beautiful ladies, face paint and all!

*Postural Assessment Info from Karen: Hi yoga friends! I am excited to share with you and reinforce the concepts I am learning in this workshop I am participating in. It is an advanced training for Pilates instructors in the application of techniques for physical rehabilitation. I'm offering free postural assessments to anyone who is interested. Why postural assessment? It's informative - aids body awareness and is useful in identifying the body's muscular imbalances that can contribute to pain and predispose the body to injury. Assessments don't take very long to do and it is something we could do right after yoga class. It would be a big help to me to get some extra practice and I think some useful info for you. Let me know if you are interested. :) Karen karen.dancingk@gmail.com

caretakers yoga tonight, restorative yoga tomorrow, & ahimsa (non-harming)
i hope you're all doing well.
this is a reminder about the yoga classes i'm teaching this week: tonight at the caretakers house 6:15-7:45pm, and tomorrow at the yoga loft 4:45-6pm. come by if you have the time! more details are below.
tonight we will talk a little bit about the principle of ahimsa, or non-harming. as most of you probably know, it is a main principle of yoga. when we practice asanas, or hatha yoga, we want to do it in a way that does not harm ourselves (or others!), by letting go of extra ambition and relaxing into the natural ease of the pose. with practice, we can learn to channel that ambition into the breath and mindfulness in how we move.
here is a mini-description from Wikipedia: Ahimsa (Devanagari: अहिंसा; IAST ahiṃsā) a Sanskrit term meaning to do no harm (literally: the avoidance of violence - himsa). Ahimsa is a rule of conduct that bars the killing or injuring of living beings. It is closely connected with the notion that all kinds of violence entail negative karmic consequences.

santosha (contentment)
``````````````````````````````
santosha, or contentment
My emptiness is full
I lack nothing.
from I Am That
till your mud settles and the water is clear?
till the right action arises by itself?
Not seeking, not expecting,
she is open, and can welcome all things.
``````````````````````````````
Santosha
centered in balance, gratitude and delight
I am grateful for everything that happens to me
I maintain my balance in the face of hardships
I rejoice in the flow of life
I see God's goodness everywhere
(this one is from a handout one of my teachers gave me a few years ago, unfortunately w/ no credits to the author... also, you can take God to mean whatever you want - nature, spirit, etc. In yoga, the term is used loosely...)

restorative yoga wednesday, no class at caretaker's house today (tuesday), review from last week
a few updates:
*thanks to everyone again for all of your energy towards helping Hollis Hawthorne. she arrived at Stanford University Hospital last Monday!! all the $ from the benefits is going to help w/ the huge loan her family had to take out to fly her here, and towards the massive medical bills in India. thank you again. you can read updates or donate more at http://friendsofhollis.com Eliza from the Caretaker's House is one of the main updaters of http://friendsofhollis.blogspot.com
*i am cancelling this tuesday's yoga class (that's today - march 24th) at the caretaker's house in order to have a semi night off. sorry! please practice on your own and come the week after if you can!! let me know if you'd like suggestions of things to practice at home... or if you have any questions from past classes.
*on wednesday, march 25th, i'll be substitute teaching a restorative yoga class at the yoga loft. please come if you can! the class is from 4:45 to 6, is $10 (the cheapest they get these days in a regular studio), and is at 321 divisadero st. @ page st. http://theloftsf.com restorative yoga is a wonderful way to deeply relax your body/mind and renew your energy. only a few gentle poses are practiced, with the support of many props, and they are held for a longer time than in a normal practice. i encourage you to try it out even if you have never been to this type of class to feel the many benefits of restorative yoga.
*thanks to those who came to class last tuesday. for those who couldn't make it or who would like a little review of the class, here is a bit of what we talked about (inspired by the retreat last weekend w/ the yoga loft!):
*events in the yoga community, please come out and support:
thanks everyone,
see you soon.

Thanks for HOLLIS donations + Restorative Yoga Wednesday
A BIG thank you to those who made it to yoga class tonight (& to those who were there in spirit) at the Caretaker's House, for sending healing energy towards Hollis, family, & friends. $46 was raised towards the costs of getting her back to the US, so she can have medical care at Stanford Hospital and hopefully recover from her coma. You can see the latest updates on Hollis at http://www.friendsofhollis
Also, while I'm here, a reminder about a restorative community yoga class tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Yoga Loft. It is $10 and goes from 4:45-6pm. 321 Divisadero @ Page St. http://theloftsf.com If you haven't been before, restorative classes are pretty much pure bliss, where you get to let go and completely relax, with much less movement than a regular hatha yoga class. You do fewer poses and stay in them longer, using lots of props (bolsters, sandbags, blankets, straps, eye pillows). Many yoga practitioners take a restorative class once a month or even once a week to balance out the continuous movement we have in our lives. Don't worry - everything is explained as well if you're new to the poses... Anyway, I encourage you to come check out the class if the time works for you. Rachel (an awesome teacher and facilitator of relaxation!!) will be teaching it tomorrow, and I will be subbing on occasion in the future (March 25th).
See you there, next Tuesday, or sometime in between.
ommmmmmmmmm shanti
Jessie
PS - If you can make it next week to Tuesday's class, please send a quick note so I know how many people to expect. RSVPs are appreciated but not mandatory. If you forget, please do still come, there's just not a guaranteed space.
